GENDER VARIANT ART

To represent anything that adverts from the “norm” is to queer.

Queer traditionally means “strange” or “unusual” but today the word carries other definition. It does not conform to the hetero-normative society.

I am a gender variant artist. I use acrylic and latex on wood. I research imagery dealing with gender queer theory and more importantly content that expresses my personal gender identification. I examine gender roles in society and search for ways to break free of pronouns that restrict those to either male or female.

The gender binary that our society relies on is restricting to those who identify as “other”. I explore the male machismo and female masculinity. I am interested in the transgender community and what it means to be male in this society.

I take this research and paint it. I add many mediums to create highly textural, almost sculptural surfaces that are designed to be similar to the inner chaos, grit, and turmoil that comes along with identifying as anything other than male or female...
